Blepharoplasty – Upper and Lower Eyelids Plasty




This is an operation consists in cutting out excess skin and also (if necessary) removing small amounts of fatty tissue accumulated under it, which makes the eyelids look as if they were swollen. the treatment not only smoothes wrinkles, but makes the eyes appear bigger.
The operation may involve upper and lower eyelids, depending on the need, and is often combined with other rejuvenating face treatments. (e.g. facelifting). The effects persist in various patients for several to over a dozen of years and are usually performed in ambulatory conditions under local anaesthesia. Cutting lines and areas intended to be cut are marked on the eyelids prior to surgery.



GOAL

The plastic of upper and lower eyelids is designed to eliminate excess skin from upper and lower eyelids, and so called “under-eye pouches”. This procedure helps to refresh the look and rejuvenate the patient by several years.


PREPARATION

Preparing for the procedure is very important, the doctor will answer all your questions and give you all the information about the procedure. It is very important that the patient should stop smoking 2 weeks before the procedure and abstain from taking medicine that disturb blood clotting. The procedure cannot be performed if the patient has a period of menstruation.


CONTRAINDICATIONS

  • hyperthyroidism
  • arterial hypertension
  • cardiac diseases
  • diabetes
  • in some cases, the eye diseases must be consulted by an ophthalmologist

TESTS FOR THE PROCEDURE

For local anaesthesia, the following tests are necessary:

  • morphology with blood smear, ESR
  • coagulogram (APTT, Prothrombin Ratio, INR)

For general anaesthesia, the following tests are necessary:

  • blood type
  • morphology with blood smear, ESR
  • coagulogram (APTT, Prothrombin Ratio, INR)
  • fasting blood glucose level
  • electrolites (K, Na)
  • ionogram, urea, creatinine
  • Antigen HBS, HIV, HBS
  • ECG with description
  • chest radiograph

TYPE OF ANAESTHESIA

In such a procedure, local anaesthesia is used in case of the upper eyelids, while in case of the lower eyelids I use general anaesthesia.


DURATION OF THE PROCEDURE

The duration of the procedure lasts between 1 to 2 hours, depending on the scope of operation.


POSTOPERATIVE SYMPTOMS

After the procedure, redness and swelling may occur, pain that may accompany the first day after the procedure should be relieved with analgesics.


COURSE OF CONVALESCENCE

After the treatment you should keep your head high, for a period of 3 weeks you should not practise sport and very intensive exercises. After about 10 days, the patient can actively participate in life. Ladies can make a gentle makeup after a week. After 7 days, the doctor removes stitches.


POSSIBLE COMPLICATIONS

  • infections
  • bad response to anaesthesia
  • eyelid incomplete closure
  • lower eyelid ectropion
  • feeling of eyes dryness

TIME SPENT IN THE CLINIC/ABSENCE

Hospitalization is not necessary, the sick absence is about 10 days.


PROCEDURE’S EFFECTS

While the effects of the procedure usually last for several years, it is an individual matter. It is very important that the patient takes special care of the eyelids area, where the skin is thin and very quickly loses its firmness. In case of some patients, the effect is permanent.
